Trail Description:
In Montezuma, drive stright through the only stop sign in town and begin looking to your right for the trailhead. There will be a pull off that fits about 5 cars on the right; there is also a sign for Sts John trail, which Hunkidori Mine trail begins at. The road is paved until here, and was manageable in a front wheel drive car, although the road is windy and minorly steep in areas so take caution. Begin snowshoeing on the Sts John trail, which is a wide road. In less than a quarter mile you will come to a switchback that turns left; keep heading up to another right-turn switchback, and shortly when you come to the crest of this ascent you'll find yourself at a spot in the trail where you can continue straight, you can ascend left, or you can take a sharp right and drop slightly into an open drainage/field. This spot will be marked by an unmarked post in the middle of the intersection. To go to the Hunkidori mine trail, take the sharp right into the drainage/field. You'll know you are in the right spot if you see mine ruins pretty immediately; on your left will be an open field and great views of mountain peaks. Pass these, and continue up the trail as it bends right. We did not see trail markers as we hiked, but the trail was easily identifiable as a clean route through somewhat dense trees. You will have a nice, gently rolling hike for about 2 miles, and then begin a steep ascent. It is 3.4 miles one way. Return the way you came!
