Trail Description:
Leaving the same trailhead as for Jones Pass Road you will quickly come to a fork in the trail. Jones Pass heads up and right (and allows snowmobiles), while Butler Gulch heads off to the left, with a gate that is sometimes closed.
The trail climbs and ends at an abandoned mine after approximately 2.80 miles. There is a clearing about 1 mile in that most people seem to turn around at. Be aware that the area is also popular for back-country skiing so you may have to yield the trail to skiers coming down the hill.

Did the whole trail yesterday (January 1, 2008), found out that it gets much steeper just past where we usually stop. Plenty of snow, it was well-packed (saw some people in just hiking boots on part of the trail.) Snowshoes recommended when you get to the steep part. A bit windy, and sprinkles of snow falling, but good weather overall.

Visited Feb 24, 2007. The trail was completely covered, as were the surrounding hills in the Gulch. Plenty of snowpack, didn't see a rock all day! It was also blowing and snowing while we were there, though I do not think there was much accumulation.
