Driving Directions to Elk Meadows:
Take I-70 to exit 252 (Evergreen Parkway). Head south approximately 4.5 miles. You will see the large meadow on the right (west) side of Evergreen Parkway. Turn right at the stoplight for Lewis Ridge Road, the main parking and trailhead are just to the right.

Visited on December 30th (yesterday) and there was plenty of snow for snowshoes or cross-country skis. Parts of the trail were well packed where you didn't need anything but hiking boots, but the rest of it was chewed up enough that snowshoes helped. There are grasses in the field sticking out, but there's plenty of snow on the trails themselves.

In the winter this is less of an organized trail system than it is just an open field you can wander where you like. That being said, there was some single-file trail during a recent visit (January 6, 2007). There was more snow than I expected, enough to warrant snowshoes or cross-country skis for sure.
